Is it panic time? Adrian Gonzalez isn’t hitting homers…

Posted by Strobl on May 6, 2011

The Red Sox brought Adrian Gonzalez over from San Diego because he can hit.  Because he has power.  But with only two homers through nearly 20% of the 2011 season, Gonzo hasn’t delivered on the long ball.  Should we panic?  You’ll have to read this to find out.

On top of everything else you said, which is all correct, I’ve seen research to the effect that power numbers only begin to stabilize (i.e. reflect whether there has been any actual change in a player’s power)after 550 at bats. With Gonzalez, there’s always the possibility that the shoulder isn’t quite as strong as it could be after surgery, which would resolve itself over time. Despite all their early problems, the Red Sox remain in pretty good position to win the East and I assume Gonzalez will be a big part of that effort.
